If the Backs menu or Move control is missing from your new tab, the page can feel locked. Those controls are themselves Backons, so they can be moved or removed like other parts of the layout. That does not mean your entire setup is gone. The Chrome toolbar icon for Backs opens a small panel with Menu and Move controls, giving you a route back into editing.
This guide is for a page that still opens as Backs but lacks an on-page control. If Chrome opens an entirely different new tab, see the separate guide to a new tab extension not working. Do not reinstall Backs just to recover a missing button. Removing an extension can affect local data, while restoring a control on an existing page is a smaller action.
Backs menu or Move missing: find the toolbar icon
Open the Backs toolbar panel
Look beside Chrome’s address bar for the Backs icon. If it is not pinned there, open Chrome’s Extensions menu and find Backs. Select it to open the panel. The panel includes ways to reach Menu and Move. This route is especially useful after you have made the page nearly photo-only and cannot see a large control on the canvas.
Use Menu to add a Backon
Choose the Menu control from the panel and open the Backon menu on your new tab. Pick the control you want to restore or another Backon you need. Dragging a Backon out of Menu switches on edit mode so you can place it. Give it a clear position before adding more. If the page is crowded, start with Menu and Move rather than rebuilding every decoration at once.
Use Move to finish editing
Move is the four-arrow control used to arrange Backons. After placing the missing control, use Move to end edit mode. Open a fresh tab to confirm the layout is saved where you expect. If you removed the original Menu or Move by dragging it off an edge, the new one is a new saved Backon, not an automatic undo of the removed record.
Understand how a control disappears
In Backs, selecting Move puts the page into editing. A Backon dragged off any edge is removed from the saved layout. That is a deliberate way to make a sparse page, but it can surprise someone who intended only to reposition a control. Pause when a Backon reaches the edge. If you want it near the border, release it within the page instead of pulling it past the boundary.
The same rule applies to Menu and Move themselves. A photo-only setup can remove every visible Backon. The toolbar panel exists so that page can still be edited later. It is worth knowing that route before you strip the page down. Try opening the panel once while everything is still visible, then you will recognise it if you need it.
Restore only what you want
Rebuild the useful controls first
Add one clock, search field or note if the page needs it. Position each control over a calm area of the background photo. Resist recreating the entire first-run layout unless that is actually what you want. A missing Menu can be an opportunity to decide which elements belong on the page now. The chosen photograph should still have room to be seen.
Check another Space if you use one
Backs Spaces hold different arrangements. If the layout looks unexpectedly empty, confirm which Space is selected before adding duplicates. A control can be present in one Space and absent in another. Once you are in the intended Space, restore the control there and open a new tab to check it persists.
When the panel does not solve it
If the Backs icon is not present in Chrome’s Extensions menu, inspect Manage extensions. A disabled or removed extension is different from a removed Backon. If the extension is enabled but the panel does not open, note your Chrome version and what happens when you click it, then contact Backs support. Avoid clearing extension storage as a troubleshooting guess; that can discard the layout and notes you were trying to preserve.
The recovery path is short: find the toolbar icon, open Menu or Move, place the control and verify a fresh tab. Keeping that route in mind makes the page easier to experiment with, because a sparse layout no longer feels irreversible.
Questions people ask
- Is removing Menu the same as uninstalling Backs?
- No. Removing a Backon changes your page layout. The extension can still be installed, and its toolbar icon opens controls that let you reach Menu and Move. Uninstalling the extension is a separate Chrome action and can remove locally stored Backs data.
- Can I undo a Backon dragged off the edge?
- The source does not show a general undo for that removal. Add the Backon again from Menu or use the toolbar panel to recover essential controls. If a removed Backon contained unique text or a task, do not assume that adding a new one restores the old content.
- What if I cannot see the Backs icon?
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu beside the address bar and look for Backs. You may be able to pin its icon for easier access. If Backs is missing from Manage extensions too, check whether it is disabled or removed before changing your page layout.
