A Chrome new tab extension not working in one window may still be working in another browser context. When a Chrome new tab extension is not working, start with a regular new tab in the same Chrome profile where you installed it. A different profile, Incognito window or browser on a phone is a different context. The page you see may be Chrome’s own page, a page from another extension or an error. Those three outcomes point to different checks. Record which one appears before changing anything, particularly if your current extension holds notes or tasks.
This guide uses Chrome’s extension controls and new tab override documentation. It does not assume that clearing data or reinstalling is the first fix. For Backs, local task and note data lives in extension storage, which Chrome clears when the extension is removed. Start with reversible checks so you can learn what failed while keeping that data in place.
Chrome new tab extension not working: check the context
Open a normal desktop tab
Leave Incognito and open a regular Chrome window on a computer. Create a new tab from that window. Chrome does not let extensions override Incognito New Tab pages, even though some other extension features can be allowed there. If the page appears in the normal window, the extension is working in the place Chrome permits. If it appears in one Chrome profile but not another, check the installed extensions in each profile.
Find the extension card
Open Chrome’s menu, then Extensions and Manage extensions. Find the new tab extension and check whether it is turned on. If it is off, turn it on and open a fresh tab. Chrome’s help page also describes a Repair control for a corrupted extension. Use that only if Chrome labels the extension as corrupted; a missing layout by itself does not prove corrupted files.
Check who controls the new tab
Look through the enabled extension cards for another product that replaces the new tab page. Chrome page overrides can conflict. Temporarily turn the other one off, open a fresh tab and observe the result. Turn it back on if it was unrelated. This is a controlled comparison, not a suggestion to delete every extension. If Chrome shows a banner saying an extension controls a page, note the extension named there.
Look for a narrower failure
If the new tab appears but one part is empty, the page override is probably working. A missing weather value, image or signed-in feature is a different problem from Chrome showing its default page. Check the part’s own connection or account state. Backs can show local tasks and notes without an account, but live weather and new Unsplash photographs need an online response. Premium sync also has its own sign-in and plan requirements. Avoid treating a slow network feature as a broken page override.
If a work or school profile blocks installation or keeps changing the page back, look for a managed browser indicator and ask the administrator which extensions are allowed. Chrome notes that organisations can block extensions. An administrator policy is not repaired by reinstalling repeatedly. If a personal browser suddenly opens an unfamiliar website, review both installed extensions and Chrome’s On startup setting. They control different actions.
Decide what to do with saved data
Before removing a new tab extension, check what it stores locally and what, if anything, the maker syncs. Backs saves layout and task data in Chrome extension local storage; Premium sync is a separate option. Chrome clears extension local storage on removal. If you have material you cannot recreate, copy the important text to another place you control before uninstalling. Turning an extension off for a comparison is the safer first check because it lets you turn it back on.
When the page returns, repeat only the test that isolated the fault. A new tab should show the chosen replacement in a regular window. Then check one saved item and one live feature separately. If a repair or browser update changed permissions, Chrome may ask you to accept them again. Read that prompt and decide based on the feature you want. Do not grant broad access merely to make an unrelated control appear.
Questions about missing new tabs
- Why does the extension work in one profile only?
- Chrome profiles keep extensions and browser data separate. Open the profile menu and verify which profile has the extension installed and enabled.
- Why is Incognito still showing Chrome’s page?
- Chrome does not allow extensions to override the Incognito New Tab page. The Allow in incognito control covers other permitted extension behaviour.
- Should I reinstall straight away?
- Check the enabled state, profile and conflicts first. Removal clears locally stored extension data, so record anything important before reinstalling.
