To see your to-do list on the page Chrome opens with every new tab, you need a new tab extension with a to-do list: it replaces Chrome's page with its own. Some lists are a few checkboxes, some take due dates, repeats and smaller steps, and some show the tasks you keep in Todoist or Trello. Here are six, ranked, with what each list does and costs.
The short version. Backs, which we make, is our pick: its Task List goes where you put it, and each task can carry a due date or a repeat, and a checklist. Momentum is the best known, and its paid Plus plan shows tasks from Todoist, Asana, Trello and others. KanbanTab is a board made for tasks alone, with an Android app. Bonjourr and Tabliss are free and open source, with simpler lists.
How we picked
First place goes on how much of the page is yours to arrange: what is on it, where it sits and how it looks. In Backs the Task List is one Backon among others, and Spaces keep separate setups for work and home. We think that makes Backs the best home for a to-do list. The other five are in order on what you can check: what the list does by its maker's own description (dates, repeats, steps, lists, links to task apps), then price and account, then ratings and the last update.
Several do things Backs does not. Momentum Plus shows your Todoist, Asana or Trello tasks. Three reach your phone: Momentum on iPhone and iPad through Safari, KanbanTab with an Android app and a web app, start.me in any browser. All five run in more browsers than Chrome. A Momentum account costs nothing and keeps tasks in step across devices. KanbanTab syncs boards once you log in; its pricing page lists only more boards, routines and a custom look as paid extras. Bonjourr and Tabliss are free in full and open source. Backs has no phone app, no reminders when a task is due and no links to other to-do apps; sync between computers is Premium, and the free plan has one Task List per Space.
Left out on purpose: to-do extensions whose listing has not been updated for more than a year, such as New Tab Todo List: Checklist, Notes, Outliner (December 2024), or that have a few dozen ratings, such as To-do List Chrome Extension (23). Dashy, whose listing names a Todoist widget, is being rebuilt; its site says the new version arrives in October 2026.

- You plan on a board, or want the list on an Android phone. KanbanTab.

Questions and answers
- What is the best new tab extension for a to-do list?
- We make Backs and think it is the best if you want the list placed where you like, with dates, repeats and checklists. If your tasks live in a task manager, Momentum with Plus shows them on every new tab; KanbanTab suits planning on a board, with an Android app.
- Can I keep a to-do list on my new tab without an account?
- Yes. Backs, Bonjourr and Tabliss need none, and KanbanTab keeps boards on your device in its guest mode. Momentum's help pages differ: one lists Tasks among what works logged out, while its Tasks page says tasks are not saved across sessions until you sign in. start.me begins with creating an account.
- Will my new tab to-do list be on my phone too?
- Not with Backs: it runs in Chrome on a computer. KanbanTab has an Android app and a web app that stay in step once you sign in. Momentum runs on iPhone and iPad through Safari, and start.me in any browser.
- Can my new tab show my Todoist or Google Tasks list?
- Momentum can, with Plus: its help centre names Todoist, Asana, Trello, ClickUp, Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, Basecamp and GitHub. start.me Pro has Google Tasks and Trello widgets, though Google Tasks subtasks and dates are not shown. Backs has no link to other to-do apps, and the pages we read for KanbanTab, Bonjourr and Tabliss mention none.
- What happens to my tasks if I remove the extension?
- KanbanTab's guide says boards kept only on your device are gone for good once you uninstall it or clear the browser's data; it offers an export to a file. Momentum's help centre says the same of data kept while logged out. Backs keeps tasks in the extension's storage, which Chrome clears on removal; with Premium, cloud sync also keeps a copy. Copy your list somewhere first.
