Bonjourr alternatives, and when to stay with Bonjourr

What Bonjourr does well, what its own pages say it does not do, six alternatives with ours first, and when to stay. Read from the makers' own pages on 25 September 2026.

Bonjourr is free, open source and rated 4.9 from more than 24,000 ratings in the Chrome Web Store. If you want a Bonjourr alternative anyway, three things on its own pages will tell you whether it still suits you. Then come six alternatives, ours first, and the case for staying.

What people like about Bonjourr

Bonjourr replaces the new tab with a calm page inspired by Apple's design. Hand-picked Unsplash photos change with the time of day, or you can use your own photos and videos. On top sit the widgets you switch on: a clock, weather, quick links with folders, a search bar, notes with checkboxes, quotes and a Pomodoro timer.

The terms are simple: no price, no account, and a listing that declares no data collected; donations keep it going. Its manifest asks only for storage, plus optional extras, and its code is public. Version 22.3.0 arrived in July 2026, and settings travel through your browser's own sync. It is made for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, with an online version for other browsers. Chrome's store counts 400,000 users and gives it the Featured badge.

Why some look for a Bonjourr alternative

Safari. Bonjourr for Safari, the App Store version for Mac, iPhone and iPad, has been discontinued since May 2026; its site cites high maintenance costs and low usage. On a Mac, its documentation shows how to set the online version as Safari's homepage instead, though its privacy policy says that version cannot sync settings. For iPhone and iPad it points to Homepage for Safari, a separate open source app.

Tasks and calendars. Its quick guide makes a to-do list from checkboxes in the notes widget. None of its pages we read mentions due dates, a calendar or links to a task manager, which fits a page its listing calls minimalist by default.

Where widgets go. Bonjourr does let you arrange the page, within a grid. You choose one, two or three columns, and a layout toolbox moves a selected widget around the grid with arrow buttons, stretches it across a row or column, and aligns it. Each layout keeps its own arrangement. Its pages do not describe dragging a widget to any spot, and its documentation says the layout system is being redesigned to be more stable and easier to use.

How we picked

First place goes on the reason Backs exists: how much of the page is yours to arrange, meaning what is on it, where it sits and how it looks. In Backs each Backon goes where you drag it, on a grid that covers the page, in colours taken from your photo.

The other five follow by how close they sit to Bonjourr: first the page itself, a photo with a clock and a few widgets; then the terms, free in full with public code and no account; then the evidence, updates and ratings. TablissNG and Tabliss are the same page on the same terms. TablissNG carries Tabliss's code on and had a release this month, so it goes first; Tabliss has more ratings and asks for no permissions, but has had no release since April 2022. Mue has the same terms with fewer users and ratings than either, Momentum has a paid plan, and Infinity is a grid of site icons.

Bonjourr alternatives, ranked

1

Backs

Free, Premium €3.99 a month or €39.99 a year

Ours, and our pick if you want to decide where things go. Backons for tasks, notes, a Pomodoro timer, clocks, weather, bookmarks and search go wherever you drag them on a grid, in colours taken from your photo.

Good forPeople who would rather place each thing than choose from columns. The Task List takes due dates, repeats and checklists, and two Spaces, separate setups, come with the free plan. No account needed.
Not forAnyone who chose Bonjourr for its terms. Backs is not open source, keeps sync for Premium, asks for more permissions (location and notifications among them) and runs in Chrome on a computer only. Version 1.0, three ratings.

TablissNG

Free

The Tabliss page, carried on: a fork of Tabliss's code under the same licence, updated in the Chrome store on 21 September 2026. It adds bookmarks, top sites and a Free Move mode for dragging widgets.

Good forPeople who want Tabliss's page with current releases and more say over where widgets sit. Free and open source, with a listing that declares no data collected, and in the Firefox, Chrome and Edge stores.
Not forAnyone who counts ratings: 4.8 from 27 and about 8,000 Chrome users. Its manifest also asks for more than Tabliss: storage, search and identity.

Tabliss

Free

Bonjourr's terms and, by its own listing, no permissions at all: free, open source, no account. A photo, a clock, weather, to-dos, notes and quick links, each widget in one of nine places.

Good forPeople who care most about permissions. 4.7 from 387 ratings and about 100,000 users; made for Firefox, Chrome and Edge, with a web version.
Not forAnyone who wants updates or a timer. The Chrome listing was last updated on 25 April 2022, its newest commit is from January 2024, and no Pomodoro timer is listed.

Another open source page built around a picture: its own photo library, your images or packs from its marketplace, with quotes, notes, quick links, weather and greetings. Maintained since 2018.

Good forPeople who like community packs of photos and quotes. Its site says there is no tracking and data stays on your device. Also for Edge, Firefox and Whale.
Not forAnyone who counts ratings or wants a timer: 4.5 from 25 and about 4,000 Chrome users, a last update in January 2026, and no timer on its listing or site.

Momentum

Free, Plus $39.95 a year

The most used of the six, with two million Chrome users: a new photo, quote and mantra each day, a to-do list, links, weather and search. 4.5 from 13.7K ratings, updated 18 September 2026.

Good forPeople who want their calendar on the page, their task manager with Plus, or Safari: its site lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and an iOS app. No account needed.
Not forPeople who chose Bonjourr to pay nothing: your own photos, custom fonts, the Pomodoro timer and task manager links are part of Plus. We found no public code, and its listing says it handles personal and sign-in information.

Infinity New Tab

No price listed

A grid of site icons more than a photo and a clock, with wallpapers, weather, to-dos and notes. Its two listings show 4.6 from 11.8K ratings and, for the Pro one, 4.9 from 24.8K.

Good forPeople who use Bonjourr mostly for its quick links. Icons can be reordered and put in folders, Chrome bookmarks shown, and signing in for backup is optional.
Not forPeople who want nothing on the page they did not choose: by its own description it may start with partner shortcuts, such as eBay, that can earn it a commission, though they can be removed. We found no public code.

When to stay with Bonjourr

Stay if the page you have is the page you want. Bonjourr is kept up, with version 22.3.0 in July and changes to its code on 19 September. It costs nothing, needs no account and keeps settings in your browser's own sync. It also runs in more places than Backs: Firefox and Edge, by its documentation Brave, Vivaldi and Zen, and Safari on a Mac as the online version.

Stay, too, if type and style matter most. Bonjourr offers hundreds of fonts, custom CSS, textures, video backgrounds and a clock whose face and hands you can change. Backs has no font choice, custom CSS, textures or video backgrounds.

Or look further for one of these:

  • Placing things yourself, in Chrome. Backs.
  • Tabliss with releases and a move mode. TablissNG.
  • The same terms and no permissions at all. Tabliss.
  • Community packs of photos and quotes. Mue.
  • A calendar, Safari, or your task manager with Plus. Momentum.
  • A speed dial of site icons. Infinity New Tab.

Questions and answers

Is Bonjourr free?
Yes, in full. There is no paid plan, and its site says donations are the only way it is kept running.
Is Bonjourr safe to use?
We can only report its own pages; nobody here has examined its code. Its Chrome listing says the developer will not collect or use your data, and shows a publisher with no history of violations. Its manifest asks only for storage, with bookmarks, top sites and search as optional permissions, and its code is public.
Is there a Bonjourr alternative for Safari?
Of the six here, Momentum's site lists Safari and an iOS app. TablissNG's install guide describes an unsigned Safari build, marked expert, added through Safari's developer settings. The pages we read for the others name no Safari version, and Backs runs in Chrome on a computer only. Bonjourr itself still works in Safari on a Mac as its online version, with settings kept on that computer.
Does Bonjourr sync between computers?
Yes. By default its settings go through your browser's own sync, as long as extensions are part of what the browser syncs. Between different browsers it can use a GitHub Gist or a settings file at a web address. Backgrounds and icons uploaded from your computer stay behind.
Can I take my Bonjourr settings to another extension?
Not directly, as far as the pages we read show. Bonjourr exports its settings as a file that another copy of Bonjourr can import, but none of the alternatives here mentions reading it, and Backs has no import from Bonjourr. Copy your notes somewhere before you switch.
